How to Paint Your Mountain Bike

When it comes to having the perfect mountain bike you may want to take some time to paint the one you have.  This is necessary if you ride your bike all of the time and it is scratched or really nicked up.  Rather than making the decision to purchase a new bike all together you may want to think about painting the bike you have.  It is not difficult at all but it will take some time.

One of the most important decisions is if you want to use a paint sprayer for your bike or to paint it by hand.  I have done both and definitely recommend finding the best paint sprayer that you can, as this will make the bike look good and the process much easier.

In order to start painting your mountain bike it will be imperative for you to make sure that you are taking the bike apart.  Taking off the chain, seat and handlebars will be a must.  If you are in a hurry and you do not do this you will find that you could get paint all over these parts.  The entire paint job will look terrible and you will have wasted your time.

Next, you have to have acetone paint remover.  Place this on the bike with a small paint brush.  Do not immediately start painting your bike once this has been added.  You must wait roughly 5 minutes before you move to the next step.

The acetone paint remover was put on the bike so that it would be easier for you to get the old paint off of your bike.  You need to scrape this off with a putty knife. It might take some time but it is totally worth it because the new paint will go on a lot smoother if you take the old paint off.

After you have removed the old paint you need to wash your bike.  It is very easy to use simple detergent and water.  The main reason you are washing the bike in the first place is to get the acetone off of the bike and to also remove any dirt that will make painting the bike difficult.  When you are finished with this step you might notice that there are some rough edges on the bike.

It will be very quick and easy to use a small piece of sand paper to remove these edges.  Once you have a smooth surface you will need to paint some primer on the frame of the bike.  Some people do not want to take the time to use primer but it will definitely make painting the bike a lot smoother.  Make sure that you are waiting approximately two hours before you touch the bike or prepare to paint it with the color you have selected.

Now you are finally ready to paint your bike frame.  It is recommended that you put at least four coats of paint on the bike.  This will give you a great look because you will not be able to see through the paint and it will not run.  Give your mountain bike plenty of time to dry before you put it back together.  You never want to rush and leave marks on the new paint job you just completed on your bike.
